Dan advised numerous start-ups, helping them devise their business or change strategies, seek funding, manage intellectual property and develop practical contracts. Sometimes these entities were non-profits and sometimes for-profits. Typically, they were trying to do something different, such as introduce a product that needed to overcome regulatory hurdles or create a standard that changed a national or global marketplace. Dan helped many start-ups overcome impediments and advance their potential.

He also represented a number of professionals, particularly in the New Urban and sustainability space, helping them with both their day-to-day legal matters but also with their creative undertakings.

Dan represented inventors, social entrepreneurs, architects, economists and consultants. He negotiated product distribution agreements in several countries and helped launch a corporate sustainability program in an international manufacturer. He advised a small publisher on market strategy and helped UK consultants create a US subsidiary.
